Each year, the Foundation asks Custodians to support a specific project including the acquisition of new collection items, the preservation of rare artefacts, and the development of innovative public programs and exhibitions. Custodian donors have generously contributed more than $2.4 million to the Library since the program's inception.
This year we are asking our custodian donors to support the establishment of a special Children’s Library in the Macquarie Street building, which will offer direct access to the best works for children and young adults written and published in Australia, with a representative sample of classic works from beyond our shores.
The Library’s collection of children’s literature is already one of the most significant in Australia. In our stacks we hold manuscripts and illustrations from authors like May Gibbs, Pixie O’Harris, Norman Lindsay, Ethel Turner, Ruth Park, C.J. Dennis, Alison Lester, Bronwyn Bancroft to name a few.
The new Children’s Library will allow browsable access to modern editions of the works of all these people, and others. It will also provide a glimpse of the riches of our own collection, and the contribution of Australian writers and illustrators to this important literary genre.
Your contribution this year will help us add to our rich collection of children’s books and literature ensuring that we are the leading repository of Australian children’s literature in the country.
