Bring a gamarada (friend) and join us in this interactive workshop. Discover words in the Aboriginal Language of Sydney, the Eora language, that have been drawn from language items from the State Library collection. Nala yan! (Let us go!)

In this 2 hour program students will:

  • learn words in the Aboriginal language of Sydney, the Eora language
  • take part in a word hunt as they explore the library
  • make a pictorial dictionary using quality watercolour materials to take back to school
  • study the impact British Colonisation had on the Sydney Eora language

HT2-2 describes and explains how significant individuals, groups and events contributed to changes in the local community over time

HT2-4 describes and explains effects of British Colonisation in Australia

Stage 2 Visual Arts

VAS2.3 acknowledges that artists make artworks for different reasons and that various interpretations are possible

VAS2.4 identifies connections between subject matter in artworks and what they refer to, and appreciates the use of particular techniques

HT3-1 describes and explains the significance of people, groups, places and events to the development of Australia

HT3-2 describes and explains different experiences of people living in Australia

HT3-5 applies a variety of skills of historical inquiry and communication

EN3-1A communicates effectively for a variety of audiences and purposes using increasingly challenging topics, ideas, issues and language forms and features

EN3-5B discusses how language is used to achieve a widening range of purposes for a widening range of audiences and contexts


Stage 3 Visual Arts

VAS3.1 investigates subject matter in an attempt to represent likenesses of things in the world

VAS3.2 makes artworks for different audiences assembling materials in a variety of ways

VAS3.4 communicates about the ways in which subject matter is represented in artworks
