State Library now open

I am delighted to be able to let you know that parts of the State Library of NSW are now open to the public.

This has quite possibly been the longest period of closure in the Library’s long history, and I for one cannot wait to welcome you (along with my Library colleagues) back to this place that means so much to so many people.

As always, the health and safety of our staff, readers and visitors is our priority so we will be complying strictly with the relevant NSW Public Health Orders as we work to protect everyone who comes through our doors.

All staff, readers and visitors (aged 16 or over) will need to be fully vaccinated before they can come into the Library. You will be asked to present your digital or printed vaccination certificate as part of the check-in process. Face masks must be worn at all times until further notice.

We will do our best to get everyone through our doors as quickly as possible, and I urge everyone to please be patient while our staff make the necessary checks.

From 11 October, not all the reading rooms will be available, and services will be limited at first with capacity restricted to one person per four square metres. Please see our Frequently Asked Questions for details.

We have taken the opportunity presented by the lockdown to repaint the ceiling of the Mitchell Library Reading Room for the first time in more than 20 years. This reading room will remain closed until the work is complete; it will reopen for study and computer use in late October. The Mitchell Library Special Collections area will open soon after that.

We are acutely aware of how important the Library is to HSC students, particularly after all these months of lockdown. With the Mitchell Library Reading Room temporarily closed, we are making every possible space in the Library available for study and free wi-fi access. Our Security and Visitor Services Officers will gladly provide assistance in helping you find a place to study.

The Library Cafe, Shop, Galleries and the Map Rooms are now open. Our new exhibition How’s Tricks: Magic in the Golden Age was forced to close on the day it was meant to open, so we have extended its run to 27 March 2022.

We will be progressively increasing reading room services and opening hours over the next few weeks. Public programs and learning activities will continue to be delivered online for the time being.

I thank you for your support and patience as we slowly move back to being the fully functioning library you all know and love.

Dr John Vallance
