Pop-up mocktail bar and alcohol awareness activities in Burwood Park
Burwood Library hosted the Drug & Alcohol Info Hub in April 2018.
The interactive display was located on the Ground Floor of the Library adjacent to the Information Desk in a high traffic area near the Library entrance/exit. Vistors reacted positively to the display. Many people stopped and took information resources or had a go on the online quiz.
As part of Youth Week Burwood Council and Burwood Library staff ran a "Burwood Bar and Beats" Pop up Mocktail Bar event at Burwood Park on the afternoon of 13 April from 3-6pm. By setting up in the park the event was able to attract students from the adjacent schools as well as interested passers-by.
A bar made from recycled pallets was set up in Burwood Park and offered free mocktails to attendees. The bar proved to be very popular with over 600 mocktails served to students from Burwood Girls High School and other schools in the surrounding area.
Assisted by library and council staff and local police, young people took part in activities such as "Walking the Line" with the Fatal Vision Beer Googles and over 110 people entered a competition to correctly pour standard drinks.
The library also set up a pop-up drug and alcohol information stall and library staff handed out over 200 showbags.
Feedback from Burwood Girls High School was that the girls had a great time and that it was a great way to talk about issues that are not often openly spoken about by incorporating fun elements with serious information.
Back in the library at the Drug & Alcohol Info Hub young people loved competing against each other in the online Your Room Drug Quiz and trying to beat the highest score. Another 170 showbags were handed out in the library.
Library staff reported a positive experience with the hub:
It was great to be able to host the hub over the 3 weeks and provide information to a wide range of people.
